Dealing with the computer is one of the key strategies for succeeding in sexual purity and sexual recovery.

Protecting your computer and yourself from porn is easy to do with some basic steps.  Just to clarify, we’re talking about roadblocks today.  These are defensive purity strategies.  In other words, hurdles that you put in front to you and bad content.

You can always find ways to plow through the hurdles if you want, but setting up these defenses make it easier to stay on track.

Let’s start with content filters and accountability filters.

CONTENT FILTERS – This is the security software that prevents bad stuff from coming in. In practically all computers, you can go to the Internet Settings and adjust the level of security protection. But you really need an extra level of security.  There are many basic content filters available.  Here’s a list of the top Internet Security downloads from CNET.com.  Some of them are even free!         CLICK HERE FOR LIST

ACCOUNTABILITY FILTERS
– This is software that tracks all of the sites that the computer goes to and reports them to one or more accountability partners. Accountability software is a wonderful innovation that has helped many men and women to find and openness and freedom in using their computers.

SOMEONE ELSE HAS THE PASSWORD
This is a great strategy for married people or for roommates. Let a friend set the password. It helps you work together on staying safe and pure.

SUPERVISED COMPUTER USE – This is a good step for those that cannot be trusted on the computer. For sex addicts. For children. For adolescents. Keep the computer in open view in a public room. Stay in the same room when the person is on the computer.

ONLY USE THE COMPUTER IN A PUBLIC PLACE – This is a good strategy for those who are single or traveling. Go to the library. Go to an open table in a coffee shop or restaurant. Only use your computer where others can plainly see your screen.

STAY OFF THE COMPUTER AT VULNERABLE TIMES – This is a very good strategy for all who struggle. Alone times can be a killer to purity. Certain times of the day can be more vulnerable. Make a commitment to your spouse or to a friend that you should not be on the computer:

  • Early in the Morning
  • Late at Night
  • When You’re Alone

GET RID OF THE COMPUTER – Extreme! You bet! I you have had major problems and have proven yourself to not be trustworthy, this may be the only solution. You may have to only go to the library to use their computer. You shouldn’t have to be off the computer forever. But an abstinence period from the computer could be the best thing to help you push the Reset button. It all depend on how bad your situation has gotten, and how bad you want to get well.

DON’T FORGET YOUR MOBILE DEVICES
These same strategies apply to your mobile computers.  Don’t

NEXT CRITICAL LAYER – ACCOUNTABILITY
Don’t’ stop at roadblocks.  Build relationships with others of the same sex that will help you set up boundaries, support you, and help you with accountability.

Note to Spouses – If your husband is not willing to set up roadblocks on his computer and mobile devices, this is a problem.  The source of temptation is too great to be left unrestricted.  We have to be willing and serious about our purity commitment.

101 – Build your computer strategy.  Draw it up.  Get the blocks, filters and passwords in place.

Beyond – Where are your boundaries when it comes to your computer?  You need to write them down.  Show them to your accountability partner, show them to your wife.  Make sure your boundaries are strong and you can speak to the gray areas.

We were impressed with a 3-part series on the Covenant Eyes blog called “7 Questions Wives of Porn Addicts Often Ask”.  The articles are by Ella Hutchinson of Comfort Christian Counseling.

These are, by far, the most popular questions that we see from wives who email us at Porn to Purity.com.

Click the links to go read the wonderful answers Ella gives to the questions of hurting wives:

7 Questions Wives of Porn Addicts Often Ask (Part 1)

#1: How can my husband love me and look at porn when he knows it hurts me?

#2: Why does my husband prefer porn and masturbation to sex with me?

#3: Why am I not enough if I am sexually available to him?

7 Questions Wives of Porn Addicts Often Ask (Part 2)

#4: He says he looks at porn because I don’t have sex with him enough, am not pretty enough, am too fat, etc. What can I do?

#5: My husband says all men do it. Am I making too big a deal out of this?

#6: My husband refuses to get help or admit this is a problem. How can I make him stop? What are the risks if he doesn’t stop?

THREE GREAT ARTICLES

5 Ways to Transform an Immodest Wardrobe

By Rachael Lee Carter,  President of Modeling Christ

She gives tips on five key points:

  • Hide Undergarments
  • Cover Cleavage
  • Workout Gear
  • Size Matters
  • Too Tight

Cleavage, Bikinis, and Facebook – Straight Talk to Young Women

Alyssa Shull of The Pink Lid offers some very helpful advice for young girls and how they can best reflect Christ online and offline.

On cleavage: I’m not saying to wear turtlenecks, I’m just saying to make sure no crack in the front or the back is showing.

On bikinis: Would you walk into an apartment complex and strip down to your bra and panties? Probably not. So then why do we think it’s okay to wear bikinis in front of people? It shows the same exact amount of skin, it’s just made out of a different material.

On Facebook: I am constantly seeing cleavage and bikinis in profile pictures on Facebook…. I fully believe that this is soft porn…. You will attract what you put out there.

Dressing with Dignity
Author Leslie Ludy of SetApartGirl.com and Ellerslie.com shares some of her top tips to women:

  • It is more than possible to exude the kind of dignity, grace and true feminine beauty that will captivate a man’s heart – without using sex-appeal to do it.
  • Any area of my body that can be associated with sensuality is not to be touched or seen by anyone other than my husband.
  • Any area of your body that can be associated with sensuality shouldn’t be viewed by other men – whether in showing skin or in showing form.
  • If you dress to honor Jesus Christ and your future husband, a godly man won’t have to avert his eyes when you walk into the room. Rather, you’ll be like a breath of fresh air to his soul.
